The Things You Don't Like About Me...

My new song, The Things You Don’t Like About Me

is out Friday, September 1st, and I’m so thrilled to share it with you. I won’t lie, this one makes me nervous because it’s so personal. As a songwriter, I am super proud of this song, but as a father, I am more proud of my 15 year old son, who unknowingly inspired it. He is an amazing human and if you know him, you know what I mean.

As a parent to a teenager, it’s crazy how you start to see your personality mirrored back at you as they get older. When you see them go through stuff, all you wanna do is give them (and in a very real way, yourself at that age) a big hug and shield them from the pain. The problem is you can’t, and even if you could they won’t let you. Turns out the very thing that binds you together is the thing that makes them pull away from you.

That’s been one of the hardest lessons for me as a parent, since you just want to make them understand how great they are.

The truth is most days I still feel like a teenager trying to to navigate my way through the halls of high school.

It wasn’t until I became a father that I began to fully appreciate what it must have been like for my dad reliving his own insecurities through me.

Thanks to my son, Griffin, for being willing to let me put this all out there. Like it or not dude, you got a lot of me ha.
